Solomon H. Diyao

Teacher, Liberia

Meet Solomon H Diyao – he’s the Beginner Class teacher at Little Wlebo school. Solomon had already gone through his teacher training before the school entered the LEAP programme, when he was required to do some more. He discovered there was lots more to learn, and said that the training with the tablet saves him “a lot of time.”

Solomon now uses pupil-centred learning techniques in his classroom. “Every day we use teaching by doing; sometimes it’s answering questions, sometime we count with counters or we can use flash cards to use new words.” Solomon says he’s seen his pupils improve “not only academically, but in their behaviour too.”

Solomon is doubly invested in Bridge – not only is he a teacher, but he’s a parent too! He has a son at nearby Bridge-supported school, Harper Demonstration. His son Peter is in Grade One; Solomon says “now he can spell everything and his English is so good!”

He’s one teacher who can perhaps relate to his pupils more than most – when he isn’t teaching in the classroom he’s busy studying himself. He’s taking night courses in education in his local university, explaining “I always want to keep improving and learning.”
