Pupil in Liberia
Syntia Aka is 14-years-old and in Grade Five at Bridge Liberia Little Wlebo in Maryland County, south-east Liberia. An Ivorian native, Syntia and her family escaped to safety in Liberia when a political crisis erupted in the Ivory Coast, leaving many dead and others homeless.
Her father is ill and her mother is unemployed but she believes her education can transform her life, opening doors to new and exciting opportunities!
She wants to be a journalist when she’s older, she says: “Everyone has a story, and I have mine. I want to tell my story and help others who don’t have a voice.” Before she can embark on that long journey of truth telling, she needs to learn how to use a computer – essential for reaching the widest audience.
As well as being fascinated by the stories and world around her, Syntia’s favourite subject is social studies. She adds: “It teaches me about the world.”
